Read My Story
I was born in 1832 and died in 1912. I lived in the area of Southampton Township which is now part of Tabernacle, NJ. Before the outbreak of war I lived with my parents John and Hannah and my brother Charles. After I married my wife Demaries, we lived with my mother. I made my living as a wood chopper. However in 1860 I owed $0.86 in taxes and had to sell off some of my property to cover the expense.
On August 29, 1862 I enrolled in the 29th NJ Volunteer Infantry on August 29, 1862 and was mustered in as a Private in Company H on September 20, 1862. I served a nine-month enlistment in the field and was honorably mustered out on June 30,1863. I was then mustered in as a draftee Private in Company G, 34th NJ Regiment on September 14, 1863. I faithfully served until my discharge on June 13, 1865 and received $15 in full from my State pay for the period September 14,1863 to May 1, 1864.
Life was hard after the war. By 1870 my wife and I had 5 children, Elizabeth 13, Charles 11, William 8, Abraham 3 and Elvina 1 and we lived in Southampton. I worked as a day laborer for over 10 years. In 1881 I suffered from a “diseased back” and applied for the Invalid Pension. I later moved to Manchester NJ where I died in 1912.
