Read My Story

In the late 1930’s the Works Project Administration created maps of many cemeteries in the United States. The purpose was to identify the final resting place of war veterans. In Tabernacle, three cemeteries were surveyed. The Junior Order of United American Mechanics on Carranza Road is noted as having one Civil War burial. The vet’s name is Charles Smith.

Unfortunately, no other records exist which can tell us more about him. There is no record of his burial in cemetery records, no tombstone, no obituary and exhaustive researches of available records has turned up only a vague reference in a census sheet.
