The Middle school was built at a cost of $5.2M and was opened in September of 1981. On a 30 acre lot, the new building included 28 classrooms. In June of 1981, before summer break, some students were allowed to carry their books and supplies across the street from the Primary school to their new classrooms in the Middle school. The school Superintendent at the time was Kenneth Olson. Olson was a teacher in the school district from 1958 until 1968 when he became the principal of Tabernacle Elementary School. In 1979, he became the superintendent. Olson was a dedicated servant to the school district, never taking vacation, and could even be seen acting as groundskeeper, maintaining the trees and shrubs at the school. In 1991, Olson died of cancer and the school was renamed the Kenneth R. Olson Middle School.
