This section explores the religious history of Tabernacle through its churches, churchyards, and the communities that formed around them. It brings together material on the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Church of Christ, Holy Eucharist, Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Medford Farms Baptist Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church, and Tabernacle Methodist Church, preserving both formal histories and community memories gathered for the 2001 Tabernacle Centennial and later society research. Particularly significant is the documentation of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and cemetery on Carranza Road, including the 1868 deed establishing land for worship and burial, and the more recent “Remember the Forgotten” project, which uses genealogical research and ground-penetrating radar to recover the stories of African American residents whose lives and graves might otherwise have been lost to history. Together, these pages show how churches and cemeteries have long served not only as places of worship and remembrance, but also as important windows into Tabernacle’s broader social and cultural past.
